In an exchange of a "new-old" cultural practice, the Gwau Maoro (loosely translated to 'we agree') of the newly engaged couple, James Proud and Moale James was held on the 20th May 2023. This event was an opportunity for both families to acknowledge the union of this couple in a Motuan culturally significant way.
The morning was spent with the respective families in both the family homes. Moale's family prepared gifts to pass onto James' family, to which they were now going to be united with and at the same time the Proud family prepared a meal to share with their new 'in-laws'.
The day was full of love, celebration and an excitement for the joining of these two families as one.
